RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2017

RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2017

Our youngest member of Hilary's Floral Design, Hannah-Mae competed at this year prestigious RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year competition in May, where she competed amongst 13 other young florists under the age of 25 yrs. This year all competitors were assigned the brief of creating a floral kite based on the title Summer Skies, and this is Hannah-Mae's winning design.

The standard of this year's RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year competition was outstanding. All of the pieces the competitors produced were stunning: but of course, there can only be one winner, and our very own Hannah-Mae did just that!

Hannah-Mae was awarded Gold and the overall winner title of RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2017.

Hannah-Mae's outstanding kite deisign was a structure made up of a series of different sized rings were used linking together with spacers to give depth to this design. Three of the rings had colour coordinating midelino sticks used to great effect creating a webwork across the circle sides. The colours bled to create the effect of the sunset to fit in with the theme of "city streets and summer skies"

Hannah-Mae's inspiration came from the Dream Catcher from the Native American culture, as this is something very close to her heart. Hannah-Mae wanted to do something unique and different for the competition, which has paid off tremendously.

The five rings ranged in colours starting with Purple then moving on to red tones, before the third ring was predominantly pink, then came orange before finishing with yellow - although this description simplifies the ingenious use of colours with each ring having some elements of all the colours to ensure the theme worked seemlessly.

There was a fantastic range of plant materials including ranunculus, vand orchid, dendrobium orchids, phalaneopsis orchids, craspedia, scabious stella, viking santini, kalanchoe, chrysanthemum, hypericum, sting of pearls senecio, skeletonized leaves, stachy leaves, spray roses and ornothgalum. After the main rings came a cascade of aluminium rings to ensure the design had great transition and your eye flowed from the very beginning to the very end.

As Hannah-Mae's first competition this is an absolutely amazing achievement, and we are so proud of her. "Words can not describe how I am feeling, I honestly didn't expect to come this far and do so well. It's my first competition, and I have never done anything like this before. This win really does mean the world to me." says Hannah-Mae when asked about her accolade. Well done Hannah-Mae!
